Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father left her family. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford later applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, which were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
